Training in a martial art is beneficial for many different reasons. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, then there some additional things to consider. Frankly, even if you don’t practice a martial art these additional considerations are good to keep in your mind.
Practicing a martial art can lead you into the realms of eastern mysticism, unhealthy mediation, and incorrect view of yourself and the rest of humanity. Therefore, we must first recognize that we have a broken relationship with God and there is nothing that we can do to fix it. We were designed to be in relationship with God, and God wants to be in relationship with us. We must realize that we are completely dependent on God for everything, and it is because of His love and mercy that He has provided a way to be made right with Him.
Practicing a martial art can build your confidence and willingness to stand up for those who are oppressed. As Christians practicing / teaching a martial art, we must seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly before God. We are all challenged to be an advocate for the oppressed and address injustice in our spheres of influence. Sometimes this means to stop doing what seems important to us to help someone out.
Practicing a martial art can make one feel they are in control, when in reality God is in control of everything. When it comes down to it, we have very little control of our lives, but for the attitudes we have and love that show others. We must be constantly aware that others around us need love and attention, which is sometimes spelled as ‘time’. So even though we train to develop muscle memory and to learn the proper techniques, sometimes the best thing we can do is slow down and spend some time with those who are around us.
